2014 Hawaii State PE & Health Conference SHAPE's Up To Be a Great Success!

On Saturday, May 10 HAHPERD helped to organize the 2014 Hawaii State PE and Health Conference.  Attended by over 130 PE and health teachers at the UH Manoa Athletic Complex, the day was filled with so much excitement and offered everyone a unique opportunity to network with teachers from around the state.

This year's keynote speaker was Sandy "Spin" Slade, President and Founder of Skillastics.  She gave such an inspirational speech about ALOHA and how PE and health teachers can make a lasting impact on our students in developing both people of character as well as lifelong advocates for good health and physical activity.

The breakout sessions this year did not disappoint as there were so many varied offering throughout the day, everyone that attended could find something that interested them.  All attendees came away with new and exciting ideas to bring into their classes on Monday!

During lunch, we recognized our HAHPERD Scholarship recipients as well as those that completed their National Board Certification:

Yvette Ikari, PE, Central District Health and PE Resource Teacher
Carina Morgan, PE, Mililani High
Keola Silva, PE, Mokulele Elem
Jodi Tanabe-Hanzawa, Health Ed, Aiea High

The day ended with drawings and giveaways for everyone.  All sorts of PE equipment were given away, from basketballs to tennis rackets.  In all it was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday and re-energize the batteries for summer and a new school year.

Special Mahalo:
*To all our exhibitors who spent the day with us and generously donated some of the prizes for our giveaways
*All the volunteers who shared their time and talent before, during and after the conference, especially Dee Curtis, Sue Hanson, Carol Asuncion, Cindy Rosebrough and Donna Ede
*BIG thank you to our conference organizer, Shelley Fey and her hard working support staff including Bobbie Perry, Yvette Ikari, Jewel Toyama, and Lisa Hockenberger.
*Finally a big thank you to all our passionate attendees!  Without you taking the time to spend your Saturday with us this event truly could not have been a success.
