Obama signs Executive Order -- President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition
Today President Obama signed an Executive Order to expand and rename the President's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports to President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition. The AAHPERD Interim CEO (Judy Young), NASPE Executive Director (Charlene Burgeson), (NASPE Senior Manager Paula Kun), and NAGWS President (Shawn Ladder) were in attendance to witness the signing. The order states that: The Secretary of Health and Human Services in carrying out the Secretary's responsibilities for public health and human services, shall develop and coordinate a national program to enhance physical activity, fitness, sports participation, and good nutrition. The First Lady formally announced what she called a "very ambitious" program to end the American plague of childhood obesity in a single generation. On February 9, 2010 in an exclusive television interview with ABC Robin Roberts on "Good Morning America," she announced the details for a nationwide campaign called "Let's Move" which calls for a myriad of initiatives that target four key pillars: getting parents more informed about nutrition and exercise, improving the quality of food in schools, making healthy food more affordable and accessible for families, and focusing more on physical education. The Department of Health and Human Services estimates that by 2010, 20% of childrent in the United States will be obese. Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight adults.
