The Southwest District of SHAPE America is dedicated to promoting school and community programs of Health Education, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance which embody such opportunities as self-realization and desirable human relationships and ensure the inclusion of programs within the best philosophical, social and educational contexts of American life.

Headquartered in Reston, VA, 25 miles west of Washington, DC, SHAPE America is the largest organization of professionals involved in school-based health, physical education and physical activity, who are dedicated to teaching and promoting active, healthy lifestyles. Founded in 1885, SHAPE America provides a comprehensive array of resources, leadership in the development of standards and guidelines, professional development and advocacy for its members as well as the general public.

SHAPE America's mission is to advance professional practice and promote research related to health and physical education, physical activity, dance, and sport.

Calling All Professionals


Are you new to HPER as a profession, OR have you been in it for a while and would like to add some adventure to your professional career?  Are you interested in contributing your talents to a professional organization?  Do you want to do more that just attend workshops and conferences? If you are, consider joining the HAHPERD Board for the upcoming school year 2016-2017. The Hawaii Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance is seeking nominations for the Board.


Benefits from being on the Board include opportunities to

  • network with colleagues with similar interests.
  • raise your level of professionalism through this volunteer experience.
  • contribute to the professional growth of others (coordinating workshops and conferences, advocating for HPER, etc.).

Nominations are open for Director (2 year term), president-elect (3 year term) or volunteer for any on-going committee (Website, Conferences and Workshops, Social, Advocacy, Teacher of the Year, Scholarship, Finance, Codes and Constitution, community service, etc.)

Save the Date:  Another Great HAHPERD Workshop Coming Your Way!



Disappointed you didn't have a chance to join us at last month's workshop?  Not going to the 2016 SHAPE America National Convention and Expo in Minneapolis, MN?  Have no fear, HAHPERD has got your back!  Please be sure to save the date of Saturday, May 14 to attend another great workshop hosted by HAHPERD.  This one will feature Aaron Hart, of the Online PE Network Curriculum (OPEN) and Danny Radd from US Games.  Details will be forthcoming in an upcoming newsletter and on the website so go ahead and dial in the date on your laptop, desktop, and phone and stay tuned!
