Legislative Health and Wellness Day

In an attempt to help Hawaii meet the nation's Healthy People 2010 Goal of increasing the quality and years of healthy living in Hawaii, HAHPERD is sponsoring a Legislative Health and Wellness Day on Thursday, February 18th beginning at 11:30 am at the State Capitol

You are invited to attend this event and to participate by emailing or calling your distirct state legislators to participate to make them more aware of the need for a lifetime of healthy activity.  By doing this, you will be advocating "A Lifetime of Healthy Activity."

Geo Motion Workshop II

Dr. JoAnne Owens-Nauslar is back to do another Geo Motion Workshop on Monday, February 22, 2010 from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm at Jarrett Middle School, Physical Education Classroom.  If you missed the workshop back in November, you should be sure to attend this one.  The NEW ELEMENTARY mats will be included as well as the original GEO mats.

2009 TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARDS

HAHPERD is pleased to announce the 2009 Physical Education Teacher of the Year winners.  The middle school Teacher of the Year is Tracy Taylor from Kapolei Middle School, and the high school Teacher of the Year is Jon Taketa from Keaau High School.  Read on for the profiles of these two outstanding award winners.

This statewide program is calling for nominations for this year's awards.  The Call for Nominations has been expanded to also include Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year, Health Education Professional of the Year, and Dance Educator of the Year.  The announcement of this was included in the February Newsletter.

2009-2010 HAHPERD SCHOLARSHIP AWARD 2010-2011

One  mission of HAHPERD is to support local students interested in pursuing a career in health, physical education, recreation and dance.  It is through the HAHPERD Scholarship fund that high school seniors and those currently enrolled in a accredited program in health, physical education, recreation or dance are able to apply for either $750 (high school) or $1250 (college/University students). It is with great pleasure that HAHPERD present three Scholarships for $1250 for the 2009-2010 school year to Christopher Andes-Paquirigan, Julia Cost, and Amber Lee.  Click below for the profiles for these three recipients, and for more information for the 2010-2011 Schoarship Award.

(Fitness Integrated with Teaching) FIT Kids Act

HAHPERD Board Endorses FIT Kids Act

The obesity epidemic has reached our nation's children.  In 2004, more than 9 million children and adolescents 6 to 19 years old were considered overweight. The Department of Health and Human Services estimates that by 2010, 20% of childrent in the United States will be obese.  Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight adults.  Read on for more information about this FIT Kids Act and to find out how YOU can help to support this Act.

"Move Every Body, Every Day, Every Way” is the theme of the 2010 National Physical Education and Sport Week, May 1-7.

Each year NASPE develops special integrated activities for teachers and their students to do during National Physical Education and Sport Week. NASPE leaders and staff encourage all K-12 physical education teachers to take advantage of these wonderful resources to showcase the quality sport and physical education programs in your school and community.
